Quick note: I probably won't be able to post a blog entry on Tuesday. If you come here anytime after 8:30 a.m. ET and this is the first sentence you read, it means the "probably" is a "definitely."
I'm going to multi-task and start with a little football this morning. If you've already drafted Bengals WR Chad Johnson, or were planning to, his sprained shoulder doesn't sound too serious.
First pitch: NL action starts early with the 12:35 p.m. ET Mets-Pirates clash, while the Red Sox and Orioles get the AL slate going at 7:05. Here's the full schedule.
Pitcher to start: We got an OK outing from Josh Johnson on Friday, a stinker from our man John Lannan on Saturday, and another nice one from Clayton Kershaw on Sunday. If Kershaw is unowned in your league, you're asleep at the switch. Fix that today, OK?
Today we'll try Pittsburgh's Paul Maholm (14.9 percent owned), who's 4-2 with a 2.75 ERA and a 1.06 WHIP in his last 10 starts.
On to the news:
I wanted to start today with an update on Adam Wainwright's situation in St. Louis. After a solid rehab start on Saturday, Wainwright appears ready, but the Cards say they aren't sure if he'll start or relieve. Some of that will depend on Chris Carpenter's return from the DL; he's expected to throw on Tuesday, pitching coach Dave Duncan has suggested that if Carpenter's ready to pitch next week, Wainwright will go to the bullpen. I think they're crazy if they don't let Wainwright start, but what do I know.
Brewers 2B Rickie Weeksleft Sunday's game with a sprained left thumb. Weeks doesn't expect to be out for long, but I'll keep an eye on this one. On the bright side for the Brew Crew, OF Ryan Braun returned to the lineup.
Red Sox OF J.D. Drew left Sunday's game with lower back tightness, according to the team's site. That's all the news available on Drew for now.
Mark Lorettashould get most of the time at second base while Kaz Matsui is on the DL for the Astros. You know how Matsui's only fantasy skill is stealing bases? Loretta doesn't even do that.
OF Hideki Matsui could be back in the Yankee lineup as soon as Tuesday. That could impact slappy, speedy Brett Gardner, who went five-for-10 over the weekend after Melky Cabrera was sent to the minors. In other Yankee news ... um, Carl Pavano might help plug a hole in the rotation shortly. No, really. See for yourself. I guess it can't hurt to give him a shot, right?
Giants starter Jonathan Sanchezis on the DL, and the team is optimistic that he won't be out longer than the standard 15 days.
Pirates OF Brandon Mosssprained his ankle Sunday, but it doesn't sound too serious.
The Nationals' Web site reports that C Jesus Flores, who hurt his calf Saturday, hopes to play Tuesday.
Since I last blogged on Friday, Tigers reliever Todd Jones was activated from the DL and then put back on it. Manager Jim Leyland said Sunday that the team's bullpen is "in total disarray." Fun times in Detroit.
I think I might be voting for Carlos Quentin over Josh Hamilton for fantasy MVP. Quentin hit home run No. 34 on Sunday.
If Hank Blalock actually returns to the Rangers this weekend, he'll play first base, with slugging rookie Chris Davis heading to the hot corner. Keep an eye on Davis' positional status in your league if you own him. Teammate Ian Kinsler will have his injured groin checked out today.
