Loudmouth. The Jimmy Rollins Saga.
Aug 14, 2008 | 6:55AM | report this

Hey Gang, been a while. sorry about that. I was caught up in the soap opera that was BRETT FAVRE.

So let's catch up a bit?

What a story. Jimmy Rollins. Now many around the league have been turned off over the years by his brash and cocky attitude. But normally, he'd bring the goods to back it up.

However these days, something hasn't been sitting right with me.

Last year's MVP, it seems, has been "phoning" it in all season. His stats are in the toilet. He's been benched for having no hustle to his game, and he was benched again for showing up late for a key game 3 in the Mets series.

Now, with all of that, about 6 weeks worth of messing up, he just called out the fans. He called them "front runners", essentially saying, that when Philly is doing well, they're happy, but when they're not, the fans are not happy.

Isn't that any sports fans?

The thing is, say what you will about Philly fans....I've showed up at games in seasons where Al Madrid was out starting pitcher and Dickie Thon was our shortstop. Those teams did not win. But the fans always showed up. More recently for the Phils....games have sold out quite a bit in the last 5 years and keep in mind, until the 2007 season,The Phightin Phils hadn't been to the playoffs since 1993 . Look at the Sixers....attendance took a hit when Iverson left...but the fans still showed. The Eagles? 8-8 last year...and you still can't get a ticket because they're all sold out. Say what you will about Philly fans, there's hasn't been a championship in this city since 1983, but, never the less, they will show up in droves to support their teams.

It seems to me, that Jimmy is just throwing everything he can into getting himself out of town.

If he wants to point fingers, maybe he should look at himself....instead of going on "The Best D---n Sports Show" and "MTV's Cribs" maybe he should take a little time, look in the mirror, and maybe point that finger at the reflection.

Stop worrying about getting on TV. Get the hustle back, get the stats up, show up for work and lead the team down the stretch. Save this nonsense for another day.

take care and be well,

Your Friends at Philadelphonic.

Philly fans are front runners sure. There will always be jumping on the wagon when the home team wins, its a party. Last year he was all smiles when things were good and he was on base all the time. He looks so unhappy because he knows hes not producing and he predicted 100 wins.Want to make a philly fan happy ,, put up or shut up..

Jimmy Rollins is still one of my fave baseball players. He is correct about some fans being frontrunners. Most teams have Frontrunners.Fans can be brutal. As a life long Todd Zeile fan etc.I have seen fans be bad towards players.Yes the baseball players make lots of money. But they are still humans.Since i have witnessed some downright rude fans.I get what Jimmy means.I think some fans are taking this all to serious. As much as i love baseball. It's just a game. There are lots more important things in life.

ya im a philly front runner. i get pissed off when players arent doing good, but sometimes are booing helps. Remember when pat burrel was terrible, we booed the hell out of him, and now he got better and we all cheer for him. jimmy we booed you and howard cause you're supposed to be are start players that carry our team, but instead your stinkin it up, although howard is actualy doing pretty good. hell the other night we were booing utley when he struck out with the bases loaded and 2 outs. Hope the team puts it together for the rest of August!!

What better way to get fans on your side than to berate them in the media? Rollins has always had a big mouth and a poor sense of sportsmanship which goes ignored because of his exceptional talent. Now that his numbers are down his big mouth takes center-stage. ALL teams have front runners and always will but those who take it to the extreme are morons. Most players understand that a lot of fans "live and die" with their teams but when success has eluded a city for so long the fans become impatient and easily frustrated. I'm a huge FLYER fan who lives in NY so I understand the issue from both sides. Keep calling the fans out Jimmy and in two weeks I'll be buying playoff tickets!!! Lets Go Mets!!!

"Look at the Sixers....attendance took a hit when Iverson left...but the fans still showed."

Huh? If attendance took a hit, doesn't that mean fans DIDN'T still show?

Rollins was comparing Philly fans - who have short memories and are quick to turn on a guy - to the St. Louis faithful, who are noted for supporting their guys through thick and thin. And he's right.

J-roll is just mad because the fans are giving him what he deserves. If he would try to just get on base instead of swinging for homeruns he would be a better leadoff guy. If he and shane dont get on the phillies usually lose. I really blame that sorry #### coach Charlie for allow his player sto always swing for the fence instead of just trying to hit the ball. The phillies should be 10 ahead in first but charlie doesn't know how to manage or play small ball.

To all you idiots out there who take things way to serious ( ESPECIALLY WIP ). I am a lifelong Phillies fan what JROLL said is 100% correct that is how Phillies fans are we are allways there for the team but that is how we are. So get over it.

Nice to see Brett Myers spotting his fastball and working a strong curve. Looks like he's a decent starter again. J-Roll can turn a game around when he wants to. He just doesn't want to anymore. What does he want? The Phils are leading the East. Doesn't get much better than that at this point in the season. Don't get selfish, Jimmy.

Philly fan are the most diehard passionate fans there are. No other city compares, we know how to deal with 25 years of losing and still find somethin to cheer about everygame. Jimmy Rollins lost a lot of respect from that interview cuz he's a little baby and cant take the heat when he blows

The fans pay money(a lot in most cases) to watch the games. They don't get a discount when a team is struggling or having a bad stretch of games.

Jimmy on the other hand is paid a lot of money to play this game. He is expected to give 100% every game in return. Jimmy doesn't lose any money for giving a less than stellar performance or get fired for having a bad attitude.

Jimmy has done both at times this season and I think the last thing Mr. Rollins should be worrying about is the fans.

The fans have a right to boo Jimmy, deal with it. You apparently have a right to take plays or games off and still be paid, so the fans have a right to voice their disapproval.

I'm so tired of all this BS. No player shall ever complain about thier fans... especially when they consistently fill the seats EVERY night. We part of what makes thier salaries, so shut up. FRONT RUNNERS?? Are you serious??? You're critisizing your fans because they're upset at bad performances... What the hell do you want us to do, throw you flowers??? You have been awful, Jimmy Rollins... Your play has been consistently INCONSISTENT. We should "BOO" the hell out of you when you come back home... All we want are players to give it thier all day in and day out... Is that so hard to ask considering how much you get paid??

Just like the philly "fans" to boo their players instead of cheer and support...classless. When a player is down and not doing their best...that boo just makes them feel SO much better. Get a clue how to act like a real fan!!!

Rollins, Utley, Pat the "Air Bat" and Howard are all stinkin it up. The Phils got lucky last year when the Mets collapsed. They need more than luck this year and they do not have it

Earth to frenchiesmaid...earth to frenchiesmaid, you seem to be listening but not hearing.

This is about Jimmy's EFFORT. Not a slump, that he's working hard to get out of. Then, he decided to go after the fans for booing?

I know i'm feeling really bad for him right now. lol

Frenchiesmaid...

Philly has the best of Fans a team has to offer. We have won nothing in the last 25 years, yet we fill the seats in no matter what sport you're talking. This booing that goes on... happens everywhere. If you were smart enough to realize, he using the fans as a source for his bad performance. That's the lowest thing i have ever heard.
But, again, it is more of the fact there is no hustle or competitive strive in his game anymore. Take notes from Utley and Victorino... I have never seen them jog to first... EVER.

The one thing that Jimmy seems to have lost sight of is the fact that, no matter what he says about the fans, they're still the ones helping to pay his salary. I have a 17 game plan for 5 seats. All I expect from the players is that they try and give it their best. I have never boo-ed a Phillies' player, but I just may consider it for Rollins. GO Fightins.

Jimmy has been dogging it all year. I hate to say it because I have always been a fan of his. But his MVP award must have gone to his head. He has been playing California Cool baseball. That does not cut it in Philly!!!
Jimmy, you are losing some fans because you have not run out ground balls all year. Charlie seemed to be giving you a bye until you didn't run out a fly ball that dropped in and you were standing on first base with your jock in your hand.
The press gave you a pass all year and still don't say much about your attitude.
The fans gave you a pass all year.
Well, we are losing and we are not giving you or anyone else a pass right now. We don't need to see you loafing. We don't want to see Howard shaking his head like the umpire blew it when if fact he took a fast ball right down the middle for strike three. We don't even want to see Chase screwing up his face in the dugout after he waved at a low inside slider for strike three.
How about everybody suck it up and get your heads straight for the stretch drive.
We are not front runners if you give us everything you have all the time and take responsibility for your play good or bad.
Take a look at how Shane Victorino plays and the attitude he has. He is only hitting in the .280s and the fans are always with him. That is not front running! That is cheering for good hustle and a good attitude.

ABOUT ME

TimCarr
I was born in NYC, but grew up about 25 minutes outside of Philly. Therefore I'm a long suffering Philly fan. I attended the Phils game where everyone threw batteries at JD DREW. I've been a Phils Fan for about 21 years. I lost that lovin feeling for Hockey after the strike. I watch soccer and watched MAN U when they had Roy Keane. Losing the 1993 World Series against Toronto still hurts. The Eagles losing to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2002 has developed a long standing resentment of Jon Gruden and his dumb sun visor. The Sixers will be just fine. Though they stress me out. Often. I went to a bunch of colleges, none had football teams. So I've adopted the UNIVERSITY OF DELAWARE FIGHTING BLUE HENS.
