RIPPLES: Let's get ready to rumble
by Nick Webster, FOXSports.com
For those of you that follow the Prem the scenario is simple, and for those that don?t, what planet are you from?
I?ll explain it anyway. If Arsenal get at least a draw Wednesday, they?re the champions, and more than a few Gunners supporters will be celebrating with some "doubles" of their own at the boozer that evening.
A loss, though, and it?ll come down to the last weekend of the season. Everyone will be wearing ?brown trousers? at Highbury if this development occurs.
On that final Saturday the Gunners are at home to Everton, while the Devils host Charlton. A draw by Arsenal, with a United win, and Fergie?s lot will nick the title on goal difference.
Back to Wednesday night though. Over 150 countries around the world will be tuning into this heavyweight clash. Along those lines, it?s my job to give you, the good reader, the "tale of the tape."
Goal Keepers: Fabian Barthez v David Seaman
Fab?s more prone to howlers than the "divine pony tail," but I could see the whiplash from a Scholsey shot flicking that tail right into a defenders face. Remember it?s all fun and games until someone loses an eye.
To be fair, there?s not a lot to choose between the two, but being that Seaman?s got more hair than me, I?m giving the nod to the Frenchman. Advantage United
Right Backs: Wes Brown v Lauren
Wes is the future of England's back line, although injuries and loss of form have made it a tough season. He does look good on the ball but playing out of position to cover for the injured Gary Neville could be Brown's downfall. Lauren, on the other hand, looks like a born right back. He loves bombing down the flank and he?s not afraid to kick you in the shins either. Advantage Arsenal
Left Backs: Mickael Silvestre v Ashley Cole
Silvestre has improved all year and finally made the position his own. Like his opposite number he likes to get forward and also like Ashley he can?t defend to save his life. Cole is probably more of a threat to score, but Mickael is a better crosser of the ball. Advantage Arsenal
Center Backs: Laurent Blanc v Tony Adams
Show me two more experienced defenders and I?ll show you my birthmark that I don?t talk about. Really though, is there a cooler player under pressure in the world than Blanc? He makes everything look so easy, except when he?s exposed to pace, which there?ll be a lot of on Wednesday. Big Tony suffers in that department as well, but the old donkey is such a seasoned campaigner that he?s hardly ever caught out of position.
No advantage, except for the retirement home XI?s they turn out for after the season's over.
Center Backs: Ronny Johnsen v Sol Campbell
Another injury dogged season for Ronny. The poor sod?s always picking up knocks, but is a steady performer when he?s not ball watching. Sol started off slowly and then came into his own when Adams was out. Campbell is more of a threat at set pieces and he does have speed. Advantage Arsenal
Right Midfield: Juan Sebastian Veron v Slyvain Wiltord
Other than being a colossal waste of money, Seba?s done very little. Throw in rumors of a bust-up in the dressing room after the Leverkusen loss and you can?t see him doing much. On the other hand, he is different dollars and he?ll be determined to leave (back to Lazio, I'm guessing) with a bang. Wiltord has shown a lot of patience this year and has scored 16 goals despite being pissed off sitting on the bench. Advantage United
Left Midfield: Ryan Giggs v Freddy Ljungberg
Absolutely mouth watering. Giggsy has had one of his best seasons ever and is a born match winner, but so is Freddy. The Swede takes the edge in goal scoring, while Ryan is more of a provider. I just wish that one or both of them were English. (small) Advantage United
Center Midfield: Paul Scholes v Ray Parlour
No question here, the "Ginger Prince" wins hands down. He?s got it all and then some. "Romford Ray," on the other hand, is merely a solid player. Scoring the winner in Saturday's FA Cup Final may have given Parlour the confidence to go for goal more often, but no one in England hits a ball sweeter than Scholsey. Advantage United
Center Midfield: Roy Keane v Patrick Vieira
Hide the women and kids, because this battle ain't for the faint. No matter who my colleague Giles Elliott picked for his all-EPL team, these are the two best players in the world at their positions. If there is an edge, I?ll give it to Patrick, and only because Keano was out for a while with his "hammy." Their first encounter WILL establish the tone of the match (let?s hope it?s a brutal foul, followed by some handbags). Advantage Arsenal
Forward: Ole Gunnar Solskjear v Dennis Bergkamp
Cor, this is getting difficult! OGS has 25 goals this year and is the perfect partner for Ruud. But Bergkamp is so smooth, he makes Casanova look like a lecherous old fool. In the end I?ll have to give the edge to Dennis, he could unlock a miser's wallet with one flick of his right foot. Advantage Arsenal
Forward: Ruud van Nistelrooy v Thierry Henry
Sixty-six goals between the two is quite simply sensational. Henry has frightening pace, while Ruud is just clinical. If the match is tight and there are only a few chances, the smart money has got to be on Van, but Thierry hasn?t scored in four so watch out. Advantage United
Managers: Sir Alex Ferguson v Arsene Wenger
Usually you?d have to say Fergie, because he is the master of psychological warfare, but Wenger has managed to one-up him recently. Alex was going off in the press about how United have played the best football in the Prem this year to wind up Arsene. The Frenchman coyly replied, ?Some husbands always think that they have the prettiest wife?. Touche. Advantage Arsenal
Overall, I think Arsenal hold the slimmest of edges and will get the point they need to become Champions. I do hope it?s a classic though and both teams just go hell-for-leather at each other in a perfect advertisement for the English game. Regardless the atmosphere will be unbelievable.
Until then, get the beers in.
